2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG

Mercedes G63 AMG

High tech for the AMG off-road classic: the new Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG impresses with state-of-the-art drive technology, expressive design and increased fuel economy. All this is largely attributable to the AMG 5.5‑litre V8 biturbo engine delivering 400 kW (544 hp) and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission system. Even more exclusive is the new G65 AMG: its AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine delivers 450 kW (612 hp) and reaches a maximum torque of 1000 newton metres - a record in the off-road segment.

Every new AMG high-performance vehicle offers an outstanding mix of "more power from less fuel" - and the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG is no exception. The "strong man" in the AMG model range has been further enhanced with the state-of-the-art powertrain of the new ML63 AMG. The design has been comprehensively reworked, so that, for the first time in the 33-year history of the G-Class, AMG customers can enjoy a raft of future-oriented systems: spray-controlled petrol direct injection, the ECO start/stop function and generator management. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine develops a maximum output of 400 kW (544 hp) and a torque of 760 newton metres. This enables the new G63 AMG to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds, with a new top speed of 210 km/h (electronically limited).

The new G63 AMG outperforms the G55 AMG Kompressor by 27 kW (37 hp) and 60 newton metres. Its direct predecessor was a clear favourite for G-Class purchasers, with a sales ratio of over 40 percent.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC and ECO start/stop function

The vehicle's driving performance features are matched by its impressive advances in the area of fuel economy. The fuel consumption of 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined) is a reduction of 2.1 litres on the predecessor model, representing fuel savings of 13 percent. This reduction can be attributed to the state-of-the-art biturbo eight-cylinder engine, along with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission system, the generator management system and the ECO start/stop function. The seven-speed automatic gearbox features three drive modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, creating an incredible range of variability. In "Controlled Efficiency" (C) mode, the ECO start/stop function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is stationary. "C" mode is also characterised by smooth accelerator and transmission characteristics and early gear changes; the vehicle is usually started in second gear in this mode. The AMG instrument cluster includes a green "ECO" symbol, indicating when the ECO start/stop function is on.

In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) modes, the ECO start/stop function is off, and the engine-transmission combination displays far greater agility. Short, precisely defined ignition and injection retardations mean shorter shift times when changing up at full load. The efficiency of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission system is further enhanced with a new fuel economy converter with centrifugal pendulum, friction-reducing bearing and transmission oil thermal management.

The fascination of the characteristic sound of a V8 AMG

A glance at the AMG sports exhaust system will reassure any doubters that all these efficiency advances have not been at the expense of emotional appeal. The twin tailpipes on both sides at the rear put out the hallmark AMG eight-cylinder sound that means so much to the vehicle's many admirers. The latest catalytic converter technology is used to ensure that the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG meets both the EU 5 exhaust emissions standard and the requirements for the US market (LEV-II standard, on-board diagnosis II and lambda probe diagnosis).

New chassis settings, optimised acoustic comfort

The suspension/damper settings in the AMG Sports chassis have been adjusted for the more dynamic handling characteristics of the new model. To reduce vibration and noise impacts, the design engineers at Mercedes-AMG have also implemented a wide range of NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) measures. Optimised bearings for the automatic gearbox, transfer case and engine cut vibration and noise levels. All this ensures a more comfortable ride and helps to keep the driver fit and alert, particularly over long distances.

The wheels and brakes are also completely new. The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG runs on new AMG 5x2 spoke light alloy wheels as standard equipment. The 9.5 x 20 titanium-grey-painted wheels with high-sheen finish are fitted with 275/50 R 20 tyres. As an exclusive special equipment option, the vehicle can be fitted with matt-black-painted AMG light alloy wheels with high-sheen rim flanges. The new AMG high-performance brakes deliver top performance in terms of deceleration, adjustable feed and endurance. All-round ventilated, perforated brake discs with dimensions of 375 x 36 millimetres at the front and 330 x 20 millimetres at the rear provide optimum thermal capability and outstanding deceleration values. The front axle is fitted with a six-piston fixed-calliper brake system taken from the ML63 AMG, with a single-piston floating-calliper system on the rear axle. The brake callipers are painted red around the entire circumference, and are also available in silver.

Fully readjusted ESP® for with more comfort functions

The new generation of the G-Class also offers a range of exemplary safety features. For example, the luxury off-roader has a completely readjusted ESP®, with automatic control systems including the start-up assist and a HOLD function, both for easier hill starts. And in an emergency braking situation, when the driver suddenly releases the accelerator and hits the brake pedal, the brake system increases the pressure in the brake lines and applies the brake linings to the discs. This ensures maximum effect as soon as the brake is applied. This "pre-filling" function supports the brake assist fitted as standard.

For customers ordering the optional trailer coupling, the ESP® trailer stabilisation feature provides increased safety when the vehicle is pulling a trailer. This additional ESP® function detects the trailer as soon as the electric connector plug is inserted in the socket on the towing vehicle. The ESP® trailer stabilisation system uses the sensors of the ESP®, counteracting any fishtailing of the trailer at speeds higher than 65 km/h by alternating brake application to the left and right front wheels. This is generally sufficient to eliminate the problem and prevent any further risk. In very severe fishtailing situations, the engine torque is also reduced and the towing vehicle is braked on all four wheels, to get the vehicle back to within a safe speed range as quickly as possible.

Characteristic AMG styling with the new face of the brand

The appearance of the eight-cylinder top-of-the-range model is also definitely up with the times. Following the example of the SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG, the G63 AMG has also taken on the new face of the AMG brand. The high-gloss black "twin-blade" radiator grille with four chrome inserts makes the new G-Class model instantly recognisable as an AMG. The grille design is consistent with the car's classic contours, with an off-road look perfectly integrated into the vehicle's overall appearance.

Another completely new feature is the AMG bumper, with three generously dimensioned openings as airflow inlets for the cooling module. Vertical high-gloss chrome stainless steel inserts create a distinctively masculine look for the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG. New LED daytime running lamps are fitted below the bi-xenon headlamps. As before, only the AMG model has the characteristic wheel-arch flares, stainless-steel running boards and side protective strips with stainless-steel inserts. Other distinctive features include the "V8 BITURBO" logo on the front mudguard and G63 AMG type plate on the rear door.

Stylish new-look interior with increased comfort

The interior features even more innovations in comparison with the predecessor model. Along with the facelift changes provided as standard, including the new instrument panel and state-of-the-art infotainment and assist systems, the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG has an AMG instrument cluster with colour TFT screen, AMG main menu and separate gear display, plus white-lit AMG sills on all doors. The classy E-SELECT shift lever with the distinctive AMG medallion is a familiar feature from other models such as the SLS AMG. An exclusive on-board environment is created by the designo leather upholstery with ruffled leather door panelling. Options available for an even more stylish interior comprise the AMG carbon trim and the designo Exclusive package.

Exclusive twelve-cylinder performance: the new G65 AMG

Even more exclusive, and also the world's most powerful production off-road vehicle, is the new G65 AMG. With maximum output of 450 kW (612 hp) and maximum torque of 1000 newton metres, the top-of-the-range V12 model delights the connoisseur with its incomparably dynamic handling characteristics. The G65 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds, and has a top speed of 230 km/h (electronically limited). This is the first G-Class vehicle to be equipped with the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine, which features new exhaust turbochargers with increased spiral cross-section, flow-optimised wastegate channels, multi-spark ignition with twelve double-ignition coils and a higher-power engine control unit. The result is enhanced combustion, leading to smoother running and power delivery. The high-quality carbon and aluminium engine cover adds a final visual touch to this extensive package of new features. As in the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G‑TRONIC automatic transmissionsystem is responsible for power transmission to all four wheels.

In terms of appearance, the G65 AMG is differentiated from its V8 sister model by the high-gloss chrome radiator grille, the 9.5 x 20 AMG five-spoke light alloy wheels, painted titanium grey with high-sheen finish, its 275/50 R 20 tyres and the V12 BITURBO logo on the mudguards. Interior features include the welcome display with exclusive AMG V12 BITURBO animation, the designo leather exclusive upholstery and the leather instrument panel trim. A unique special touch is the distinctively V12 diamond design of the seats, including the impressed AMG medallion on the headrests. This distinctive upholstery feature is repeated on the door central panels. A comprehensive range of standard equipment includes black piano lacquer designo trim features and designo foot mats with a V12 badge. An exclusive special option from the AMG Performance Studio is AMG light alloy wheels, painted matt black with high-sheen rim flanges.

The AMG G-Class: unmistakeable by tradition

The G55 AMG Kompressor has been a favourite since 2004, as a strong character, immune to passing fashions. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 supercharged engine initially developed 350 kW (476 hp), increasing to 368 kW (500 hp) in 2006 and 373 kW (507 hp) in 2009. The maximum torque of 700 newton metres remained unchanged, along with the vehicle's supremely dynamic performance values. The G55 AMG Kompressor accelerated from zero to 100/km in 5.5 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h (electronically limited).

2013 Mercedes G-Class

Mercedes G-Class

Mercedes-Benz has once again significantly upgraded the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, so reemphasising its position as the leader among off-road vehicles. The interior is characterised by high-quality appointments finished with exquisite materials. The instrument cluster and centre console have been completely redesigned. The driver's field of vision now encompasses a colour screen, between two new round dials. The car features as standard the sophisticated COMAND Online infotainment system, including a navigation system and internet access. New LED daytime driving lamps and new exterior mirrors bring a few discreet changes to the exterior appearance of the luxury off-roader. The range of safety features can be optionally enhanced with the addition of Blind Spot Assist, the parking aid PARKTRONIC and the adaptive cruise control system DISTRONIC PLUS. New to the range are the G 63 AMG with an eight-cylinder biturbo engine and the ECO start/stop system as standard, and the G 65 AMG with twelve-cylinder biturbo engine.

Since it was originally conceived in 1979, as a vehicle to be used primarily in tough off-road terrain, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has undergone an astounding process of evolution. Over the course of 33 years Mercedes-Benz has refined what was initially a very practically-oriented off-road specialist by giving it a high-class interior and road-going qualities on a par with those of the premium saloons emanating from Stuttgart. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class today is considered the top model among luxury-class cross-country vehicles, and has provided the gene pool for the other very successful SUVs built under the Mercedes-Benz brand. The G-Class has been voted off-roader of the year countless times over the past years - as also once again this year.

A comprehensive range of measures ensures that this classic cross-country vehicle remains in a class of its own in the off-road sector.

These measures include new engines, a significantly extended range of appointments, a new, even more luxurious interior and a few discreet external modifications that nevertheless manage to preserve the timeless, classic design - virtually unchanged since 1979 - that has made the Mercedes G-Class a true automotive style icon.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: "Our G-Class has been a force to be reckoned with for the last 33 years. In its latest evolutionary stage, it offers state-of-the-art, powerful engines, a further improved range of luxurious appointments and the very latest safety features, as well, of course, as its now legendary off-road capabilities. At the same time the design remains true to its down-to-earth, unmistakable style."

Discreet exterior modifications, a complete new look inside

The external modifications include LED daytime running lamps and new exterior mirrors for all engine variants. The AMG versions also feature a new, characteristic AMG radiator grille with double louvres, plus distinctive new bumpers with large air intakes. Red brake callipers and 20-inch wheels, available here for the first time, complement the emotive appeal of its exterior.

The instrument panel and centre console have been completely redesigned to include new controls and generously proportioned, exclusively designed trim elements. These give the interior of the car a fresh and classy look. Drivers will now find a TFT colour display in the instrument cluster between the two round dials. A further large colour screen, conveniently positioned in the centre, is part of the COMAND Online system and incorporates a DVD changer and the COMAND Controller, which are standard on all Mercedes-Benz G-Class models. This new infotainment generation offers, amongst other features, a navigation system with special additional off-road functions, the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. In order to ensure that the G-Class nevertheless does not lose any of its character, certain specific design elements in the interior have been preserved. The G-Class thus retains the grab handle on the front-passenger side, the switches for the three differential locks - clearly aligned within the driver's field of vision and highlighted in silver-coloured trim - and the redesigned shift lever in the lower section of the centre console.

New optional extras include safety features such as DISTRONIC PLUS, Blind Spot Assist and the parking aid PARKTRONIC with reversing camera. The ESP®system has been completely revised and now includes Trailer Stability Assist and a HOLD function.

Further individualisation options from the exclusive designo range are available as enhancements to what is already a very high-quality interior package.

Sophisticated engines with high power reserves

The range of engines in the Mercedes-Benz G-Class includes the G 350 BlueTEC and the G 500, both as a long-wheelbase station wagon, plus the G 500 as a short-wheelbase Cabriolet model. The basic version of the long-wheelbase station wagon model is the G 350 BlueTEC with V6 diesel engine and a displacement of 2987 cc. The four-valve engine has an output of 155 kW (211 hp) at 3400 rpm and has available torque of 540 Newton metres across an engine speed range of 1600 to 2400 rpm. The BlueTEC technology developed by Mercedes-Benz minimises its emissions, in particular of nitrogen oxides (NOx). The G 350 BlueTEC works to even better effect with the addition of AdBlue®, an aqueous urea solution that is injected into the flow of exhaust gases. Refilling with AdBlue®is conveniently done from the outside of the vehicle.

One alternative to the diesel engine is the G 500, with its powerful 5.5-litre V8 petrol engine. This has an output of 285 kW (388 hp) and offers excellent torque of 530 Newton metres. The same engine also ensures that the G 500 Cabriolet has generous reserves of power to deal with any situation.

Both the G 350 and the G 500 feature the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission as standard. This sixth generation of the stepped automatic transmission that has been developed and produced by Mercedes-Benz since 1960 has once again been thoroughly revised, and optimised with regard to both consumption and comfort.

New to the range is the G 63 AMG with V8 biturbo engine (400 kW/544 hp and 760 Nm of torque), which features the ECO start/stop system as standard. The engine range has been extended by the addition of the G 65 AMG with V12 biturbo engine (450 kW/612 hp and 1000 Nm of torque), making this the most powerful series-produced cross-country vehicle in the world.

Superior off-roader

The technical qualities of the G-Class continue to be highly prized. The tremendous torque of its engines makes the luxury off-roader an excellent vehicle for towing, while its three electrically controlled 100-percent differential locks, ladder frame and rigid axle characteristics make it an unrivalled proposition in rough, off-road terrain.

The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class is available from June 2012.

2013 Mercedes-Benz Citan

Mercedes Citan

Powerful yet with compact dimensions making it especially suitable for city use - for the first time, the Mercedes-Benz portfolio of vans features a dedicated delivery vehicle for the urban environment. With its impressive quality and driving dynamics, exemplary safety and economy, and high level of versatility and robustness, the new Mercedes-Benz Citan is a truly professional urban delivery van.

The Mercedes-Benz Citan will be unveiled to the public for the first time at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover in September 2012.

Choice of three lengths and three model variants

Due to its versatility and adaptability, the new Mercedes-Benz Citan fulfils a broad range of commercial applications. Based on a panel van, this urban delivery van is available in three different lengths: 3.94 m, 4.32 m and 4.71 m.

There will also be a variable, five-seater Citan Mixto vehicle with folding rear seat bench, wire mesh partition separating the load compartment, and two sliding doors. This mixed-use vehicle is based on the extra-long variant. The third basic design is the Citan crewbus, which is also a five-seater vehicle with folding rear seat bench and optional sliding doors on each side, but this time with a long wheelbase. Depending on the model, there are also three different weights ranging up to a maximum permissible gross vehicle weight of 2200 kilograms.

As an alternative to the standard rear-end doors, Mercedes-Benz will be supplying the Citan with a wide-opening tailgate. Optional roof rails boost flexibility as does the optional ladder hatch for the panel van to facilitate the transportation of extra-long items.

Comprehensive safety equipment

As is the case with every Mercedes-Benz vehicle, safety plays a big role in the new Citan. The urban delivery van comes with the Electronic Stability Program ADAPTIVE ESP® as standard, which takes the vehicle load into consideration. This innovative dynamic handling control system in the new Citan combines the functions of the anti-locking braking system ABS®, VDC® (Vehicle Dynamic Control) which counters over- and understeer, and TCS® (Traction Control System). It also includes ASR® (acceleration skid control) and drive and braking torque control.

Up to six airbags onboard as standard

Start-off Assist, daytime running lamps, height-adjustable seat belts, belt tensioners and belt force limiters for the driver and front passenger, a seat belt reminder and driver airbag all come as standard. Amongst other standard features, the Mercedes-Benz Citan crewbus (with M1 homologation) additionally has a front passenger airbag, thorax sidebags and windowbags for the driver and front passenger.

In the panel van, a full partition wall protects the driver and front passenger from loads sliding or tipping over. There are rings in the rear for securing the load. A plastic floor covering and partial trim prevent items with sharp edges from damaging the body in the load compartment.

Characteristic brand look with prominent radiator grille

The Mercedes-Benz Citan is instantly recognisable as a Mercedes-Benz thanks to the vehicle's characteristic brand look. Providing the brand signature, the chromed star is self-assuredly set against the prominent, robust radiator grille with three sporty perforated louvres. The Mercedes-Benz Citan's bold headlamps and the pronounced V-shape to the bonnet with its clearly defined edges are equally striking.

The trapezoidal shape of the air intake in the bumper emphasises width and the powerful impression made by the Citan. Again, this feature is one of the brand's typical style elements at the present time, from the latest Mercedes-Benz cars in the compact class through to the new Actros.

A distinctive tail end styled in detail

Also emphasising width, the angular lower edge of the rear window mirrors the line of the vertically mounted tail lights, the detail of the new Citan reflecting the expert hand of Mercedes-Benz designers. On variants with rear-end doors, the numberplate is affixed on the wider, left-hand side of the asymmetric doors. When buyers order their Mercedes-Benz Citan with a tailgate, the numberplate is positioned centrally.

The new Citan is a compelling urban delivery van with a unique appearance and fits seamlessly into the portfolio alongside the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Vito vans.

Equipped to a high standard for ergonomic and comfortable working

Just as distinctive, the interior of the new Mercedes-Benz Citan is equipped to a high standard. Both the driver and front passenger benefit from equally firm, comfortably padded seats. The form-fitting shape of the backrests in particular provides lateral support, thereby ensuring comfort and safety. Drawing on the brand's typical design idiom, the fabric cover on the seats is skin-friendly and breathable, as well as easy to care for and durable.

As powerful and striking as the exterior of the new Citan, the instrument panel is designed around the driver. The surface has a leather-like grain for an attractive look and feel.

Drivers of any other Mercedes-Benz will immediately feel at home in the cockpit of the new Citan and not just due to the familiar star on the steering wheel: the combination switches, gearknob, light switches and keys on the instrument panel all meet Mercedes-Benz's usual standards for the driver's area in terms of layout, look and function. Trim over the glove compartment enhances the interior further.

Focus on functionality

The Mercedes-Benz Citan is all about meeting the challenges faced in day-to-day operations. Functional features include a large glove compartment, a stowage compartment between the front seats and a useful overhead stowage compartment across the entire width of the windscreen to accommodate all those items that drivers keep on hand on a daily basis. The practical, standard equipment for the new Citan includes a height-adjustable steering wheel, central locking with remote control and exterior mirrors which can be adjusted from inside.

Engines covering all requirements

The choice of engines is broad. Three high-torque, turbodiesel direct-injection engines with outputs from 55 kW (75 hp) to 81 kW (110 hp) and a nippy, supercharged petrol engine generating 84 kW (114 PS) cover all standard requirements. All the diesel engines have a particulate filter as standard. Five and six-speed transmissions with a joystick gearshift positioned within easy reach on the centre console transmit power to the front wheels.

Handling as expected of the brand: safe and smooth

The developers of the Mercedes-Benz Citan have paid particular attention to ensuring that the handling is as expected of the brand, delivering a combination of driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. The Direct-Steer system is accurate and sensitive, while the suspension, damping and stabiliser bars have been carefully attuned to each other.

Whether empty or loaded, the new Citan is a bona fide Mercedes-Benz, offering precision, driving safety and the smooth handling that drivers are accustomed to from the Sprinter and Vito.

Economical thanks to low fuel consumption

Outstanding economy is another trademark of the new Citan. In addition to long service intervals of up to 40,000 km or two years, this extends to fuel consumption. Factors here are the economical drive system together with the standard electrohydraulic steering.

A gearshift indicator as standard helps drivers of the new Mercedes-Benz Citan to adopt an economical driving style. Fleet operators are able to increase the efficiency of the new Citan still further by way of speed limitation set ex factory.

BlueEFFICIENCY package reduces consumption further

The petrol-engined Citan comes with a BlueEFFICIENCY package as standard, which is optional for the diesel versions. Amongst other features this includes the ECO start/stop function, battery and generator management, plus optimised low rolling resistance tyres depending on the variant which again reduce fuel consumption.

Options allow the Citan to be adapted fully to customer requirements

Thanks to a range of individualisation options, the new Mercedes-Benz Citan can be tailored with ease to a customer-specific deployment scenario. In addition to safety and comfort options, there are also numerous functional extras to choose from.

Different partition systems, a folding front passenger seat to enlarge the load compartment, various door and window configurations and load compartment trim options are just a selection from the extensive range. Accessories that can be supplied ex factory include roof racks, carrier systems and load-compartment tubs. As an alternative to individual options, Mercedes-Benz Citan buyers have access to various specially created packages.

The new Mercedes-Benz Citan is turning out to be a true transport professional in every detail. Special superstructures made by bodybuilders can be adapted to the vehicle technology with the help of a special interface and a parameterisable special module.

Tailor-made service portfolio

Attractive, tailor-made financing and service offerings are being prepared for the new Mercedes-Benz Citan. These aspects are very important to customers so the new Mercedes-Benz Citan scores highly thanks to the integrated expertise of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

2013 Mercedes GL63 AMG

Mercedes GL63 AMG

Luxury and refinement, striking design, maximum safety and the dynamism so typical of the brand: the new high-performance SUV, the Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, combines compelling technologies with an extensive range of standard equipment and pure ride comfort for up to seven passengers. Effortless superiority comes courtesy of the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, which develops a peak output of 410 kW (557 hp) and maximum torque of 760 Nm. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM roll stabilisation provides high-level driving dynamics and the comfort one would expect from the Mercedes brand.

Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "The new GL63 AMG completes our performance-oriented all-wheel drive offering. In addition to the ML63 AMG all-rounder and the recently unveiled, characterful G63 AMG and G65 AMG models, the GL63 AMG places particular emphasis on dynamism and style. Combining the first-rate comfort of the S-Class with the performance of an AMG sports saloon, the GL63 AMG is unique in its segment.

"Creating the perfect basis for characteristic AMG performance and a superior driving experience: the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine. A look at the technical data provides some powerful arguments. Peak output of 410 kW (557 hp) and maximum torque of 760 Nm result in first-class performance. The Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG manages the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds and its top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). NEDC fuel consumption comes in at 12.3 litres per 100 kilometres (288 g CO2/km).

The AMG M 157 eight-cylinder engine features an innovative, high-tech power package including spray-guided direct petrol injection, piezo injectors, biturbo charging, air/water intercooling, all-aluminium crankcase, a four-valve-per-cylinder design with variable camshaft adjustment, plus alternator management and the ECO start/stop system.

Power is transmitted to all four permanently driven wheels by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. Featuring three modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, this seven-speed automatic transmission offers a fascinatingly broad scope of variability. In "Controlled Efficiency" (C) mode the ECO start/stop function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine as soon as the vehicle comes to a standstill. "C" also stands for a gentle accelerator and transmission characteristic with early gear changes; start-up generally takes place in second gear here. A green "ECO" symbol in the AMG instrument cluster indicates to the driver that the ECO start/stop function is active.

In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) driving programmes the ECO start/stop function is inactive and the engine-transmission combination displays far greater agility with more spontaneous responses. A brief and exactly defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshifting at full load additionally provides for shorter shift times and an acoustic experience.

Enhanced efficiency and driving dynamics

To enhance efficiency, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission incorporates a fuel-economy converter with centrifugal pendulum, bearings designed for reduced friction loss and a transmission-oil thermal management system. Friction loss-minimised axle gears, electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, an optimised belt drive, and demand-responsive control of all ancillary units and pumps also help to reduce fuel consumption.

Mercedes-AMG deploys a specially designed transfer case for the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, which distributes the drive power to the front and rear axle at a ratio of 40:60 in the interests of dynamic handling. As if that were not enough, the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package - consisting of air suspension, special damper struts, automatic level control and Adaptive Damping System (ADS) - is combined with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilisation. This system, which comes as standard and is specific to AMG, employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to reduce the body's roll angle during cornering. Apart from enhanced agility and driving pleasure, the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM has the additional effect of increasing handling stability and therefore safety, particularly at higher speeds.

Roll stabilisation, damping and suspension adapt automatically to the prevailing driving situation, offering both optimum ride comfort and maximum stability. The Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG driver is able to choose at the push of a button between the three suspension modes "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport plus". The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds in order to minimise drag while increasing driving stability.

The AMG-specific elastokinematics at the front axle and the more robustly designed rear axle stabiliser bar are responsible for improved steering precision. The enhanced drive train delivers the best possible power transmission and hallmark Mercedes reliability. The 4ETS electronic traction control system which features as standard provides for optimised grip when friction coefficients vary.

AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, AMG high-performance braking system

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering features variable power assistance which responds in accordance with the chosen suspension mode. It also helps to save fuel, as the steering assist function only requires energy when the driver actually moves the steering wheel. The Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG comes as standard with 5-spoke light-alloy wheels in format 10 x 21, painted titanium grey and with a high-sheen finish, fitted with tyres in size 295/40 R 21. The AMG high-performance braking system provides for the shortest possible braking distances and high fade resistance with ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round in size 390 x 36 millimetres (front) and 345 x 26 millimetres (rear).

Performance-oriented design with masculine features

Striking, masculine, unmistakeable: these attributes describe the design of the GL63 AMG. Mercedes-AMG has enhanced the main stylistic features of the new GL - powerful dynamism and sporty elegance - using specific elements that emphasise the top V8 model's exceptional performance. The typically upright GL radiator grille with its central Mercedes star is adorned with high-gloss slats painted in black. AMG styling elements include the front apron with its large openings that ensure an effective air flow for the cooling modules. The bottom air intake takes the form of a typical AMG stylised "A" with a gap under the fine black fin through which air can flow optimally to the cooling modules - the perfect blend of design and high-tech. The trim insert in matt silver chrome installed under it creates a sense of width and coordinates optimally with the borders of the LED daytime running lamps in the side air openings.

The AMG front apron elegantly merges into the exclusive wheel-arch flaring. In order to accommodate the large 53.3 cm (21-inch) AMG light-alloy wheels with the wide-base 295 tyres, the flaring widens the vehicle by 22 millimetres on each side. From the side, observers will notice the V8 BITURBO logos on the wings and illuminated running boards with an aluminium finish. The rear wheel-arch flaring blends into the AMG rear apron which is again adorned with a striking trim insert in matt silver chrome and the suggestion of black air openings. Creating both a visual and acoustic highlight are the two chrome-plated, exposed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system.

Exclusivity and dynamism dominate in the interior

Great attention to detail, excellent ergonomics and a generous amount of space available - exclusivity and dynamism also dominate in the interior of the Mercedes GL63 AMG. All seven seats in the high-performance SUV are covered in high-quality leather, as is the centre armrest. Electrically adjustable AMG sports seats feature double topstitching in a contrasting colour and AMG badges on the front seat backrests and outer rear seat backrests. The dashboard, armrests and door panelling come in ARTICO man-made leather with double topstitching. As part of the optional designo Exclusive package, these components can be covered in high-quality designo leather.

The AMG Performance 4-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather in the grip area, flattened bottom section on the steering wheel rim and aluminium shift paddles ensures optimal vehicle control. 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class

Mercedes GLK-Class

Following the world premiere in April 2012, the new Mercedes-Benz GLK is displaying its full credentials on- and off-road. Its claim to leadership of the compact SUV segment is underscored by trailblazing assistance systems, engines matching efficiency with agility, a new design and an extended range of equipment and appointments.

The newly designed exterior lends the GLK added dynamism. The body combines classic elements of all-terrain vehicles with the design idiom of the current Mercedes-Benz models. Stringent lines, expansive surfaces and the smooth-surfaced, volume-emphasizing front and rear areas harmonise with the hallmark GLK body features which are typical of classic, functional all-terrain vehicles. Apart from the attendant benefits in off-road terrain, this design also offers concrete advantages in day-to-day use. The high seat position provides a commanding view of the traffic situation, with the body lines also designed for excellent visibility.

The designers at the Centre of Competence for Interiors have undertaken a thorough makeover of the dashboard, for example: a wide trim in aluminium or optionally in wood spans the entire width of the dashboard. The new round vents and additional trim elements in silver shadow also catch the eye. A high-end colour display is optionally available for the instrument cluster. A three-spoke sports steering wheel, new upholstery colours and seat designs plus indirect ambient lighting featuring LED fibre-optic technology, which is available on the GLK for the first time, further enhance the feel-good atmosphere inside the car.

Clean machines: the GLK engine range

The range of engines provides for drive comfort and attractive performance in all GLK models in conjunction with low emissions and fuel consumption. In all, there is a choice of six diesel models and one petrol engine. The GLK 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC features a four-cylinder diesel engine generating 150 kW (204 hp) of power and 500 Newton metres of torque from a displacement of 2143 cc. Despite its formidable performance, this model is extremely frugal when it comes to fuel consumption: on average, the compression-ignition engine consumes 6.1 to 6.5 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (159 - 169 g CO2/km, NEDC combined mode).

The two rear-wheel-drive models GLK 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with six-speed manual transmission are even more fuel‑efficient. Both versions get by on 5.5 - 5.6 litres of diesel per hundred kilometres (143 - 147 g CO2/km, NEDC combined mode). The top performer among the diesel versions is the GLK 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY. Despite the 25 kW (35 hp) power increase, the top diesel model runs on around 17 percent less fuel, at 6.9 - 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres (179 - 183 g CO2/km, NEDC combined mode). The GLK 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY petrol-engine model featuring the trailblazing engineering of the leading generation of V-engines deploys BlueDIRECT technology to make its mark in terms of performance and fuel consumption.

The excellent fuel economy of all GLK models is underpinned by a comprehensive package of BlueEFFICIENCY measures as well as by this state-of-the-art engine technology. In addition to the ECO start/stop function that comes as standard, these measures include the seven-speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission. Low-friction axle drives, electric steering and tyres with low rolling resistance also play their part in reducing fuel consumption.

Exemplary safety as standard

Assistance systems familiar from the S- and E-Class feature as standard to enable a further improvement in active safety and driver-fitness safety and take the compact SUV to the top of its market segment. Electric steering with STEER CONTROL, which supports the driver in unstable driving conditions by triggering an impulse which can be felt on the steering wheel, prompting countersteering by the driver in the correct direction, Brake Assist (BAS), which provides additional brake power when emergency braking is detected, and ADAPTIVE BRAKE featuring Hill-Start Assist, HOLD function, brake drying in the wet and priming of the brake system all support the driver. The high standard of active safety is ensured by the AGILITY CONTROL suspension with selective damping system, the ESP® Electronic Stability Program with integrated trailer stabilisation and tyre pressure loss warning and, on the 4MATIC models, by permanent all-wheel drive and the 4ETS electronic traction system.

Optional equipment includes the ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system and the PRE-SAFE® anticipatory safety system. Additional assistance systems, including active variants, are optionally available. One example here is Active Parking Assist, enabling automatic manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces. To facilitate manoeuvring when visibility is poor there is a backup camera with guide lines or - for the first time from Mercedes-Benz - a 360° camera. Additional systems are optionally available as individual items or in special packages. The Driving Assistance package Plus comprises DISTRONIC PLUS including BAS PLUS, PRE-SAFE® Brake, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist. The Parking package combines the described 360° camera including Active Parking Assist and PARKTRONIC. The Lane Tracking package includes Lane Keeping Assist and Blind Spot Assist. Another new development is the Offroad Engineering package in combination with the Intelligent Light System (ILS). Offroad Light is available here for trips in difficult terrain. Specific headlamp settings provide for better off-road orientation by more widespread illumination of the field of vision.

The revamped GLK-Class incorporates the integral safety concept in keeping with Mercedes-Benz's brand philosophy, which is based first and foremost on real accident scenarios. The GLK's highly robust occupant cell provides an effective basis for occupant protection in conjunction with the front and rear deformation zones. The GLK comes with numerous standard-fit items of equipment to protect its occupants. In addition to airbags, pelvisbags and sidebags for driver and front passenger, there are also windowbags for the driver, front passenger and rear passengers as well as a kneebag for the driver. Design: Rock-solid character in a fresh guise

The newly designed exterior lends the GLK added poise. The body combines classic elements of all-terrain vehicles with the design idiom of the current Mercedes-Benz models. Stringent lines, expansive surfaces and the smooth-surfaced, volume-emphasizing front and rear areas harmonise with the hallmark GLK body features which are typical of functional all-terrain vehicles. These include short overhangs, the upright front end, slender roof pillars, a steep windscreen and the taut roof line. The body design is not a stylistic end in itself. Rather, it applies the advantages typical off all-terrain vehicles to the compact SUV class. Accomplished ATV-specific features such as approach and departure angle and ground clearance enable off-road ventures at any time. The neatly designed body and the good all-round visibility combined with the seat position enhance suitability for everyday use and provide for relaxed driving.

Beneath the newly designed headlamps, all models offer LED daytime driving lights in a chrome clasp as standard. The radiator grille with two slats and central star follows the design idiom of the current passenger car models. The slats are painted silver, with chrome inserts optional. The headlamps embody a new interpretation of the signature Mercedes lamp design. On the basic model with reflection-type headlamps, a chrome torch feature spans the two reflectors. On models fitted with the Intelligent Light System (ILS), the bi-xenon headlamp comprises the projection unit, a reflector and the torch with LED fibre-optic cables for the position light, above which the turn signal indicators consisting of individual LEDs are located.

A particularly striking feature of the side view is the roof rails, featuring a totally new design tailored to the new design idiom. The polished gallery bar rests on black plastic supports and lends the silhouette a more elegant line. As a welcome side-effect of this new design, the new rails weigh considerably less than their predecessors. This is particularly beneficial to driving dynamics, as a weight reduction in the roof area of a vehicle has a far greater impact than equivalent weight savings in other areas, such as the underbody.

The rear bumper lends a bold, sporty character to the GLK's rear end with its width-emphasizing lines and delicate tail lights. Particularly striking features here are the new-style simulated underguard - optionally in chrome - and the chrome-plated tailpipe trims integrated in the rear apron which also come as standard. The tail lights have undergone a complete revamp in terms of both appearance and functions. Fibre-optic cables and LEDs are also employed to provide the GLK's rear end with a unique and characteristic night design, the new licence plate LED lamp adding a finishing touch.

New wheels feature as part of the model facelift, in size 43.2 cm (17-inch), 48.3 cm (19-inch) and 50.8 cm (20-inch) and sporting various paint finishes or a high-sheen finish. An aerodynamically optimised 43.2 cm (17-inch) wheel is also available.

The AMG Sports package for the GLK

For GLK customers who appreciate sporty elegance a comprehensive AMG Exterior Sports package is available, boasting hallmark design features from the renowned customisation company. These include AMG front and rear apron, the specific radiator grille with two chrome slats, AMG LED‑ daytime driving lights, 48.3 cm (19-inch) AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels and a sporty suspension setup.

Interior: Even classier setting, high feel-good factor

Designing the new interior for the GLK was an exacting task. The compact SUV's width was to be emphasized so as to further heighten the feeling of space inside the vehicle. At the same time, the developers were also intent on enhancing the impression of quality. Their efforts have spawned impressive results: The GLK's interior offers the comfort, the ergonomics and the quintessential MB feel-good factor which is generally the reserve of higher classes of vehicle.

The models with the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission are fitted with the DIRECT SELECT lever in ergonomically convenient position on the steering column tube. This frees up space in the centre console for a stowage compartment, which is provided with a precision-finished frame in silver shadow and can be closed by means of a retractable cover.

Interior Sports package substantially upgraded

The Interior Sports package which was available for the predecessor model has been upgraded to include black sports seats in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre with stitching in alpaca grey (alternatively real black leather upholstery). Other components are the 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel in nappa leather, door centre panels in ARTICO man-made leather with diagonal stitching, shift lever in nappa leather with chrome surround and sports pedals in brushed stainless steel.

Three new apps are available for COMAND Online - for news, share prices and help in finding a parking space. It is planned to introduce around a dozen new apps each year. Daimler has set up an App Development Group specifically for this purpose in Palo Alto, California/USA and Bangalore, India.

Active safety: Assistance systems take the GLK to the top of its market segment

Assistance systems familiar from the S-Class and E-Class feature as standard to enable an improvement in active safety and driver-fitness safety and take the compact SUV to the top of its market segment. Electric steering with STEER CONTROL as standard, which supports the driver in unstable driving conditions by triggering an impulse which can be felt on the steering wheel, prompting countersteering by the driver in the correct direction

Brake Assist (BAS), which provides additional brake power when emergency braking is detected, and ADAPTIVE BRAKE featuring Hill-Start Assist, HOLD function, brake drying in the wet and priming of the brake system when emergency braking is detected all support the driver.

Optional equipment includes the ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system or the PRE-SAFE® anticipatory safety system. This feature uses image information from four cameras in the front and rear areas and in the exterior mirror housing to generate a bird's eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings. The undistorted image is presented in real time on the central COMAND display. In addition to the functions of the backup camera, it also enables monitoring of the areas to the side of the vehicle and in front of the vehicle, thus helping to avoid inadvertent collisions during manoeuvring. Guide lines provide additional assistance, the 360° camera marking the vehicle's movement range according to the steering wheel angle.

Additional systems are optionally available as individual items or in special packages. The Driving Assistance package Plus comprises DISTRONIC PLUS including BAS PLUS, PRE-SAFE® Brake, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist. The Parking package combines the described 360° camera including Active Parking Assist for automatic manoeuvring in and out of parking spaces and PARKTRONIC. The Lane Tracking package includes Lane Keeping Assist and Blind Spot Assist.

The right direction: recommendations from STEER CONTROL

The facelift provides the GLK with electromechanically assisted direct steering. This configuration employs a variable steering ratio which becomes noticeably more direct as the steering wheel angle increases. This provides the driver with better feedback from the road and reduces the necessary steering work. In turn, this results in improved handling and agility. The electric steering system additionally offers speed-sensitive power assistance, providing for enhanced steering comfort throughout the entire speed range.

The standard-fit STEER CONTROL system becomes active when the assistance systems have diagnosed unstable driving conditions which can be alleviated by simple steering movements. To this end, an appropriate level of steering wheel torque is determined on the steering wheel in accordance with the given driving conditions and duly set by the electric steering assist system. In case of oversteering - with the rear end of the vehicle pushing towards the edge of the turn in the road - STEER CONTROL prompts the driver to steer in the opposite direction until the vehicle regains stability. Correspondingly, in case of understeering - with the front end of the vehicle pushing towards the edge of the turn - the driver is prompted to increase the steering wheel angle. The system can also help to compensate yaw when the GLK brakes on a road surface offering different levels of friction on the right and left, e.g. on winter roads which are covered in ice on one side. STEER CONTROL then prompts the driver to turn the steering wheel in the appropriate direction to compensate the yaw.

Even if the driver ignores STEER CONTROL's recommendations, sufficient reserves remain available to stabilise the vehicle with the dynamic handling control systems such as ADAPTIVE BRAKE, ESP® or 4ETS. STEER CONTROL always supports the driver in an "advisory" role, never overruling them.

Stability pact: AGILITY CONTROL - suspension with selective damping system

With the AGILITY CONTROL suspension the GLK demonstrates a high standard of flexibility and is able to resolve the conflict between the different aims pursued in designing SUV suspensions: on the one hand, chassis and suspension engineers seek to create a vehicle which is sporty and agile while at the same time offering a comfortable and soft ride and also performing well on off-road terrain. When the onus is on sporty, adaptive handling, the springs and above all the shock absorbers require a certain hardness. This, in turn, rules out the desired suspension comfort which is typical of the brand and imposes restrictions on off-road capabilities. If the vehicle is fitted with softer dampers in pursuit of suspension comfort and off-road performance, this will naturally diminish the driving dynamics. "Stroke-dependent damping" provides a way out here. The shock absorber is configured such that its cushioning forces are applied in a flexible manner. During normal driving over moderately contoured roads or on slow cross-country trips the system responds in soft mode, to the benefit of the occupants' wellbeing and the vehicle's off-road performance. In order to ensure that this wellbeing is also maintained when the driver adopts a bolder style or in abrupt evasive manoeuvres, the dampers then switch to a harder mode to provide for a high level of driving stability in such situations.

To avoid any unpleasant consequences in the event of tyre damage, all GLK models incorporate a tyre pressure loss warning system. This system detects sudden pressure losses in a tyre and triggers a corresponding warning in the instrument cluster. Tyre pressure monitoring is optionally available to further improve safety in this area. Incorrect tyre pressure or "creeping" pressure losses are indicated by the warning "Check tyres", while rapid pressure losses trigger the message "Caution Tyre malfunction". The tyre pressure monitoring system identifies newly fitted wheels automatically.

"Offroad Engineering package" enables superior off-road performance

The Offroad Engineering package continues to be available, ensuring that the vehicle is well able to assert itself away from paved roads with Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR), off-road driving programme (adaptation of transmission shift points and accelerator characteristic), tough underguard and a raised suspension.

When the "Offroad Engineering package" is on board, the so-called "off-road switch" in the centre console enhances the GLK's capabilities in difficult terrain. At the touch of a button a special drive programme is started which varies the shift points of the 7G-TRONIC, "softens" the accelerator characteristics and activates the ESP® off-road functions with off-road ABS and a special off-road 4ETS system. Engine control intervention is subsequently reduced and the system additionally permits higher wheel slip values. This control strategy improves off-road traction in particular on surfaces offering low friction levels, such as sand, gravel or rubble. The GLK's off-road ABS was premiered in the current M-Class. It identifies the most diverse ground conditions via the continuous comparison of wheel slip models. This results in the best possible deceleration strategies for off-road trips on rock, sand, rubble, gravel or slush.

In this equipment variant with Offroad Engineering package, is provided with a manual drive programme (M) in which the individual gears can be selected via paddles on the multifunction steering wheel. This operating mode guarantees maximum off-road driving enjoyment. An additional switch activates Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR), which automatically maintains a preset speed between 4 and 18 km/h on steep downhill stretches. The driver is able to vary the speed at any time by means of the cruise control lever.

The ground clearance of 210 millimetres and the minimal body overhangs (824 mm at the front, 957 mm at the rear) results in an approach angle of 23 degrees and a departure angle of 25 degrees; the ramp angle stands at 19 degrees. The GLK is able to negotiate gradients of up to 70 percent; the maximum angle of inclination is 35 degrees. Together with the relatively compact wheelbase of 2755 millimetres and the comparatively low vehicle weight, this ensures that the GLK is able to make good progress even in topographically difficult terrain.

Offroad Light for better off-road visibility

When travelling at low speeds in confusing off-road terrain, the broadest and brightest possible illumination of the area in front of the vehicle is expedient to enable more effective and faster recognition of obstacles. As for the GL, a special Offroad Light is thus also available for the new GLK in conjunction with the Offroad Engineering package and the Intelligent Light System (ILS). The Offroad Light goes on automatically when the driver activates the Offroad drive programme while the headlamps are on. To this end, the bi-xenon headlamp modules pan outwards by 6 degrees, the luminous power of the xenon burner is increased by 3 W and a symmetrical light distribution is set. In addition, the LED cornering lights on both sides are switched to permanently lit mode, while dynamic curve illumination and range adjustment are deactivated. These settings ensure broader and brighter illumination of the area directly in front of the vehicle in comparison to ILS, which is optimised for on-road use, enabling any obstacles to be recognised more quickly.

The Offroad Light is active up to a speed of 50 km/h. Upon the driver dropping below this threshold, the ILS automatically reactivates the light functions which are optimised for on-road use.

Passive safety: Exemplary safety as standard

The revamped GLK-Class incorporates the integral safety concept in keeping with Mercedes-Benz's brand philosophy, which is based first and foremost on real accident scenarios. The GLK's highly robust occupant cell provides an effective basis for the occupant protection systems in conjunction with the front and rear deformation zones.

In developing the active and passive safety of the new GLK, Mercedes-Benz has drawn on the findings of its in-house accident-research activities, which began over 60 years ago and continue to play an instrumental role in the ongoing evolution of automotive safety. This fund of knowledge is complemented by the latest findings from real accident scenarios, detailed simulations and extensive test series. The sum total of all this knowledge is incorporated into the development process and applied in concrete protection measures.

The holistic approach which is pursued in the interest of a high standard of safety is manifested in particular in the integral safety concept, which Mercedes-Benz has also realised for the new GLK. Beyond mere compliance with crash test regulations, this pioneering safety philosophy focuses on all aspects of driving which are of importance to the safety of the occupants and other road users. The Mercedes safety concept divides these aspects into four phases:

• Safe driving: avoiding danger, warning and assisting in good time
• In case of danger: acting in an anticipatory manner with PRE-SAFE®
• In an accident: appropriate protection
• After an accident: mitigation of consequences, swift assistance

The GLK comes with the following standard-fit items of equipment to protect its occupants:

• Airbags for driver and front passenger, kneebag for driver, pelvis bags for driver and front passenger, sidebags for driver and front passenger, windowbags for driver, front passenger and rear passengers
• Seat occupancy recognition for front passenger seat
• Crash-responsive pedals
• ISOFIX child seat anchorage points in the rear and Top Tether attachment points on the rear of the rear seat backrest
• 5 head restraints, height- and tilt-adjustable for driver, front passenger and in the rear, crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints for driver and front passenger
• 3-point seat belts including mechanical belt height adjustment and belt force limiter for driver and front passenger plus automatic belt height adjustment on the outer rear seats, belt status display for rear seats in the instrument cluster
• Pedestrian protection with active bonnet

Sidebags are optionally available for the rear passengers.

Mercedes to the rescue: Mercedes-Benz emergency call system "MB eCall"

When the new GLK is fitted with COMAND Online, the eCall automatic emergency call system from Mercedes-Benz is on board automatically. After a serious accident the rescue services can be notified automatically and are provided with comprehensive information within a matter of minutes, including details such as the accident location or the vehicle model. How it works: if airbags or belt tensioners are activated in a crash and COMAND Online is connected to a mobile phone, eCall will relay the vehicle's exact GPS position and its identification number (VIN). This information is sent via SMS to the Communication Center's emergency call and service office, with the position data also being transmitted using the DTMF method (dual-tone multi-frequency). Even if the occupants are unconscious or unsure of where they are because they are on a business trip, for example, the emergency services alerted by the Communication Center will be notified quickly, receiving accurate information.

The vehicle will also quickly establish a voice connectionwith the Communication Center. Communication takes place not in the language of the country in which the vehicle is located, but in the language which the driver has set for COMAND Online. It is also possible to make an emergency call manually because "Mercedes-Benz emergency call" is always the first entry in the phone book. eCall will be introduced in several stages: on 1 June 2012 the automatic emergency call system will be introduced in nine European countries - Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. A further 19 countries will be added at the end of 2012. All Mercedes models which are launched after 1 June 2012 will offer the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system in combination with COMAND Online. Apart from possible mobile phone charges, Mercedes customers will not incur any costs for the Mercedes-Benz eCall system.

Drive system: Efficient, clean, powerful: the GLK's drive system

The modern range of engines in conjunction with the comprehensive BlueEFFICIENCY measures provides for drive comfort and attractive performance in all GLK models combined with low emissions and fuel consumption.

In all, there is a choice of six diesel models and one petrol engine. The GLK 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC boasts the most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine in the SUV world. The direct-injection engine rated at 150 kW (204 hp) and generating 500 Newton metres of torque from 2143 cc enables the GLK to perform superbly. Key merits are the engine's torquey character, its top speed and its flexibility. Despite its formidable performance, this model is extremely frugal when it comes to fuel consumption: on average, the compression-ignition engine consumes 6.1 to 6.5 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (combined NEDC fuel consumption). CO2 emissions stand at 159-169 grams per kilometre. Similarly to the GLK 220 BlueTEC 4MATIC model, it also complies with the EU6 emissions standard and the US BIN‑ 5 standard.

The two rear-wheel drive models GLK 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with six-speed manual transmission are even more fuel‑efficient. Both versions get by on 5.5 - 5.6 litres of diesel per hundred kilometres (143 - 147 g CO2/km). The top performer among the diesel versions is the GLK 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY. 620 Newton metres of torque provide the V6 compression-ignition engine with exceptional power delivery from low revs. Despite the 25 kW/35 hp power increase, the top diesel model runs on around 17 percent less diesel fuel, at 6.9 - 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres (179-183 g CO2/km, NEDC combined mode).

The GLK 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY petrol-engine model makes its mark with the groundbreaking technology of the leading generation of V engines from Mercedes-Benz. At the heart of the BlueDIRECT technology package lies the third-generation spray-guided direct petrol engine with piezo injectors. In combination with multi-spark ignition, this technology offers further potential for fuel savings.

BlueEFFICIENCY measures for further reductions in fuel consumption

The excellent fuel economy of all GLK models is underpinned by a comprehensive package of BlueEFFICIENCY measures as well as the state-of-the-art engine technology. In addition to the ECO start/stop function that comes as standard, these measures include the seven-speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission. Low-friction axle drives, electric steering and tyres with low rolling resistance also play their part in reducing fuel consumption.

7G-TRONIC PLUS, standard on all 4MATIC models of the GLK-Class, boasts even lower converter slip and optimised efficiency. A central role is played by the new torsion damper, which effectively eliminates torsional eccentricities and vibrations in the transmission. The lower the rpm and the lower the number of cylinders, the more severe these can be. This results in a conflict of aims between comfort and fuel-efficient operation. Mercedes-Benz developers resolved this by using what is known as a twin-turbine damper, which is also fitted with a centrifugal pendulum on the diesel models. Depending on the rpm, this moves the centre of mass and allows comfortable operation even in the most economical operating range. Furthermore, the optimised damping allows a marked reduction in the slip of the torque converter lockup clutch even under low loads, which also contributes to fuel savings. This technology also allows an even faster response to driver commands via the accelerator pedal. Friction-optimised bearings and new transmission oil thermal management also help reduce fuel consumption.

The standard-fit ECO display in the instrument cluster further enables the driver to check the effects of his driving style on fuel consumption, and to modify his driving behaviour as necessary. The ECO display visualises the fuel efficiency of the driver's style by means of three bar diagrams. Moderate acceleration, steady driving and a foresighted, anticipatory style triggers a rise in the individual bars, which always stand at 50 percent when the vehicle is started up. Conversely, heavy acceleration, major variations in speed or frequent braking in relation to coasting down without braking cause the bar values to drop. Drivers who quickly fill the bars and keep them at 100 percent thus demonstrate a particularly energy-efficient style of driving.

4MATIC: powerful all-wheel drive with cutting-edge control systems

The 4MATIC drive system in the GLK-Class is among the most powerful all-wheel drive systems there is; its control systems break new ground. Advantages over other systems with a transversely installed drive unit are achieved thanks to the basic compact, light and friction-loss-optimised design with its longitudinally positioned engine and integrated main and transfer case. Fuel consumption, for example, is at the same level as that of a comparable, conventionally driven vehicle, whilst noise and vibration levels are on a par with those in higher vehicle categories.

In combination with the ESP®, ASR und 4ETS dynamic handling control systems, the basic 45 : 55 percent distribution of drive torque between front and rear axle provides for superior and clearly predictable handling. The newly developed multi-disc clutch in the central differential supports the system when particularly low friction values apply between tyres and road surface, such as on snow or ice. A basic locking effect of 50 Newton metres between front and rear axle results in a significant increase in traction while maintaining a high level of driving stability.
